Acupuncture for Depression

Depression is a term that describes a variety of ailments ranging from minor symptoms to incapacitating symptoms. Symptoms of depression may include unexplained weight loss, reoccurring insomnia or hypersomnia, agitation, fatigue or loss of energy, inability to enjoy life, inappropriate feelings of guilt, diminished ability to think or concentrate, or recurrent thoughts of death or suicide. My approach to depression treatment with Acupuncture is based on an assumption that western defined depression is characterised by one or more distinct patterns of disharmony which may differ from client to client suffering depression. Patient diagnoses are made using signs and symptoms such as taking pulses and through physical and tongue diagnoses, enabling the development of a specific acupuncture treatment plan; through of a selection of points and consideration of other lifestyle changes. Typical time frame for depression treatment:

  • Acute treatment – two treatments twice a week for 8 weeks followed by one treatment for 4 weeks.
  • Normal treatments for moderate depression (most cases) – one treatment per week for 12 weeks, continuing by maintenance of treatment once every two weeks and then moving to monthly treatments for the next year, to include seasonal treatments.
